Next to the Sesia river, a castle was built in the village of Cozzo, which was rebuilt by the people of Milan in 1214 and again in the XV century, when it became a possession of the Gallarati family. During that time, the castle was embellished with the addition of a Ghibelline crenellation, still present today, a tall tower, and two drawbridges. The internal court was decorated with “cotto” tile mouldings and frescoes.
Construction and embellishment works were not yet completed when, in September 1499, the Castle hosted Louis XII, King of France, who was leading his army towards Milan. A fresco in one of the rooms of the castle recalls this important event.
The castle is a well-renowned building in the Lomellina area, thanks to its designation around ten years ago as headquarter of the “Mondo X” community. It dates back to the XI century, making it one of the oldest fortified buildings in the area. However, it was completely transformed, if not entirely re-built, under the Visconti rule around the year 1350. The construction of the ravelin, or at least its modification, dates back to 1467, during the Sforza era.
