Information on the fresco
The most notable and prestigious guest of the couple is certainly the King of France Louis XII, who before entering Milan victorious, stopped in Cozzo in 1499.
The fresco – now in this room of the castle but originally in the entrance courtyard – celebrates the meeting.
The king is welcomed by Mary and her retinue of ladies; Pietro is a little distant.
Maria knows how kings are welcomed: in 1311 her ancestors welcomed Henry VII, aspiring emperor, Dante’s son, who had raised so many hopes in Italy. And who knows how many times he had heard the story told about the episode in his family But even Louis XII, to stabilize control over newly conquered Milan, needed the support of the most influential houses. Pietro thus became part of the provisional government of the duchy, and was then appointed senator by the king of France himself, while other Roeros took on important roles.
